For each video group, create a document that will be your Video Log. In it, I want records of everything that happened as you work on your video. Individually, you will receive a test grade based on your group's Video Log, so the more details, the better. This also means that it's important that your name is in the log somehow, showing me that you actively participated in this project. I would suggest that one person be the "keeper of the log" and that each of you keep track of it's progress.

VIDEO LOG DUE: Monday, 5/24 with your final video

Finalize your production plan for your video today. Please be as detailed as you can! Print this out and turn it in when you are finished>

Create a document named PSA_summary_teamname.rtf and save it in your maddox folder. It needs to describe the following items:

  1. Who is in your group? Please note who has the camera that you'll be using.
  2. Who is the target audience for your video?
  3. Why did you choose that particular group?
  4. What is the "thesis statement" for your video?
  5. What is the intended result of your video?

In another document called PSA_plan_teamname.rtf, you'll need these items:

  • a detailed synopsis/storyboard of what will happen in your video
  • a list of items/props that you will need for your video
    • Also, make a note about how you plan to procure this item.
  • a list of location sites for shooting your video
  • Make a production/shooting schedule:
    • on this day, at this location, we'll shoot this scene and use these props
    • we will need to make these arrangements ahead of time
    • who is responsible for each of these things

DUE: PSA_summary_teamname.rtf - today at the end of class - print it out.

DUE: PSA_plan_teamname.rtf - Monday, 5/17 at the end of class

Tuesday, 5/4: Planning for Your Class's Domain

I'm going to refer to each class's task as a domain, so when I talk about "your domain," that means the task for which your history class is responsible.

You don't need to know any specifics in order to plan for your domain. The primary task for all domains at this point would be:

  • Identify exactly what is your message.
  • Identify target groups:
    • Try to identify groups of people that can help you get your message out, or that will endorse your message
    • Consider targeting people who know people that can provide support for your cause.
  • Strategies for communicating with each of those target groups.
  • Identify what results you want to see from each target group.
    • Is there a way that you can measure these results so that you know if your campaign is working?

Along with identifying your target groups, you might want to create a spreadsheet with contact information that you can have at your fingertips. You'll also want a list of contact information to provide to your target groups, depending upon what results you are looking for. We will set up a "master" spreadsheet online so that any of you may add information and then access it to find whatever contact information that your domain might need.

Brainstorm with your group and record your ideas, no matter how random they may seem! Some of your ideas might be good for another domain to use in this effort.

DUE: Thursday, 5/6 in class.

Thursday and Friday, 4/29 and 4/30: Organizing Your Research

To begin with, today, print out the resources and notes that you've collected and turn them in to me.

Wednesday, 4/14: Prezi Review

Today in class, I want you to write your Prezi review as a blog topic. Follow the same guidelines that you did for your Artopia review - I will post those again on the blog page.

If, for some reason you don't meet in the lab, I expect you to write this out on paper and turn it in to Mr. Coleman by the end of the class period. I realize that in this case, you will have to work from what you remember about Prezi, and I will take this into account when grading them.

DUE: midnight TONIGHT, 4/13. This grade will count for this 6 week grading period, so I will not accept this late. (7th period - yours is due Friday by the end of class).

Just a reminder of what this review should include:

  • List the different features that Prezi offers
  • Give at least 3 example of how Prezi could be used in an assignment for any class
  • What is your recommendation for a teacher who wants to use Prezi in class?
  • What is your recommendation to another student about using Prezi for a class assignment (in any class)?
  • Tell me what you like about it
  • Tell me what you didn't like about it

These questions are also posted on my blog page.

I will grade you based on how complete your answers are for each question. Be sure to support your answer - don't just say "I don't know" or "yes" with out telling me why.

Monday, 4/12: We'll Give it a Go Today

The lab was professionally cleaned over the weekend, so we'll be back in class and will continue presenting your Prezi's.

I will take points off for Prezi's I receive after class starts on Wednesday, 4/14, so get them turned in - you know who you are!

I will give a participation/completion grade today

Thursday, 4/8: Fire Plans

Due to the smokey smell in the lab, we'll meet in the auditorium today. Bring something to do so we don't interrupt the class on the stage.

Tuesday, 4/6: Share the Prezis

We'll begin presenting our Prezi's today in class. I'm looking forward to this!

I'll be giving a participation/completion grade today

Friday, 4/2: Prezi due....

Your finished prezi needs to be submitted by the time class starts on Tuesday, 4/6. Please use the "share" option and send it to:

  • fwafatech4@gmail.com
  • fwafatech6@gmail.com
  • fwafatech7@gmail.com

IF, for whatever reason, it will not send, close that box and reopen the box. Look for the "copy link" on the lower right side and click that button. Then, open an email in your own email account and paste the link in the body of your email, then send it to your class's email address. Make sure I know who it's from!

DUE: Tuesday, 4/6, at the BEGINNING of class

On Tuesday then, you'll write your review of Prezi, which will be due at the end of that period.

Monday, 3/29: Prezi.com

I was very impressed with your evaluations of Artopia! We're going to look at a few more web2.0 applications with the same purpose in mind. This next one is an online presentation app called Prezi.

You'll need to creat an account using an email address, but you won't need to access the email unless you forget your password at some later time.

We'll look at the intro video together and then see what you discover on your own!

ASSIGNMENT FOR TODAY: Also look through the Prezi Academy: Advanced, Lesson 1 to get some more specific information about how to use Prezi. Spend the rest of your time playing with Prezi.

Before you leave today, you need to come up with a topic that you will use to build your first Prezi. I will come around and ask you for your topic.

TODAY: your Prezi topic

Tuesday, 3/23: So, What Do You Think?

Revisit Artopia. I want you to write a blog post telling me:

  • What is your recommendation to another student about using Artopia for a class assignment (in any class)?
  • Tell me what you like about it
  • Tell me what you didn't like about it

These questions are also posted on my blog page.

  • the rest of the form should fill out itself

Spend some time with this over Spring Break if you can too. When we get back, I want you to write a review of it - thumbs up, thumbs down, why, cool stuff you can do with it, etc. But that's for when we get back!

Today will be a participation/completion grade.

You will need to open your haiti_name.xlsx file to be prepared for grading these powerPoint presentations.

This is what you will be grading for each powerPoint presentation: Haiti Grading Rubric.

GRADING: You will receive a grade based on your spreadsheet:

  • Is it formatted correctly?

  • Did you take this grading assignment seriously?

Your own powerPoint presentation grade will be that of your peers and finalized by me according to the criteria of the rubric.

DUE: PowerPoint due in class on Monday, 2/1

I will not be in class today, so you will need to print out your finished assignment and turn it in to my subsitute before the end of class.

ASSIGNMENT: I want you to create a PowerPoint presentation of your ideas and observations based on what you wrote about how technology is being used or could be used in the rescue and relief efforts in Haiti. I'm not going to assign a set number of slides for your presentation - use however many slides you need to communicate your information.

Please remember the basics of a good presentation slide show:

  • CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT.....
  • Make sure that your content is not interuppted by the cools things that you do to that slide.
  • Use bullet points rather than great lengths of text that you must read to us. <groan>
  • Post all of your sources on the last slide - a simple URL will be enough for this assignment.

DUE: Monday, Feb 1 in class

Friday, 1/22: Haiti

Island Nation of Haiti Reels After Earthquake Causes 'Enormous' Damage

We will take some time at the beginning of class to read this article, then we will talk about it as a class. This is all in preperation of a project we will be doing based on the Haitian Earthquake, which will be explained on Friday in class.

Today is a participation/completion grade. Each student needs to contribute something to this conversation. This will be a "raise your hand" conversation - I will ask you to sit in the hall if you cannot work that way or if you are distracting your classmates or myself from our group time.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: DUE Tuesday, 1/26 in class:

Your first paragraph will be a summary of the CES. Your summary needs to be at least 200 words, written in complete sentences to form [a] paragraph[s]. This summary needs to be written so that anyone can read it and not have to wonder what the questions are.

  • What is it?
  • Why do they have it?
  • Who puts it together?
  • When is it/how often is it?
  • Where is it?
  • Who goes to it?
  • Also include any personal comments about the CES.

Choose 3 new products that interest you and answer these questions. You will write one paragraph for each product. Word count here is not important. Just make sure that you cover the following information: (You might not find some of this specific information - just do the best you can with what you find!)

  • What is the name of your product?
  • Why did you choose this one?
  • What is the purpose of this product?
  • How will it change or improve things?
  • Are there already other products like it on the market? If so, what product(s)?
  • Can you think of any possible problems it might create? If so, what kind of a problem?
  • When will it be available for purchase?
  • How much will it be?
  • Would it be smart to get one of these right now, or would it be best to wait to see what else comes out?

Your final paper will consist of at least 4 paragraphs (more if you need), the first paragraph being a minimum of 200 words, and each paragraph after that will cover a specific product that was presented. This is a writing assignment so please write as if Mrs. Emmonds will be grading it too.

Monday, 1/11: Finishing the Cryptogram

If you finished the cryptogram that we started during our last time together, please work on Cryptogram #2 for the rest of the period. If you finish that one, create your own cryptogram!

DUE: Cryptogram Assignment, today at the end of class.

Cryptogram Assignment.
Cryptogram #2.
If you finish the second one, create your own cryptogram.

Thursday, 1/7:: Cryptograms

This file is your assignment: Cryptogram Assignment.
This file is for if you'd like to do another one:Cryptogram #2.

A cryptogram is a message in a substitution code. This is an example:

M R X   D G Y U M   L Y M
T H E   S M A R T   C A T

In this example then,

M = T
R = H
X = E

Here are some tips:

  • Be patient! Solving cryptograms is something you can teach your brain to do
  • If a sentance starts with a 3 letter word, what word could it be?
  • Try to identify as many vowels as you can first.
  • Look for 2 letter words - one of those letters will most likely be a vowel.
  • Look for words that are contractions. What could that word be?
  • When you find a letter, use it for every instance of that letter before you continue looking for letters.
  • Be patient with yourself! Stop and take a breath if you need to clear your mind!
  • Don't beat yourself up! Be patient!
  • Did I mention yet to be patient with yourself?

Friday, 10/9: Starting Something.....

This is a very cool web site:
In Pictures: Computer tutorials based on pictures, not words.
I will award up to 10 extra credit points if you share this web site with someone - they will need to write a sentence or two stating that you showed them this web site and if they think that this would be a useful web site to brush up on or learn some basic Office skills. Be sure to show them all of the different tutorials that are available besides Word 2007.

ASSIGNMENT: Begin with this tutorial called Word Basics. Some of this may be familiar to you - count that as a review. We will work through all of the exercises in this tutorial, so it will be new soon enough!

The purpose of this tutorial is to remind yourselves how to do basic tasks in Word and/or learn how to work with Word 2007. These will be tasks that you will need to know how to do for the rest of your high school career, so please pay attention while you are working on them!

There will be a test at the end of these exercises!

Wednesday, 9/9: Blogging Guidelines **4th period, Friday 9/11**

We need to come up with some guidelines (rules) that you think we should be using in our blog posts. I've seen some pretty inflammatory posts and some harsh statements stated as fact, as well as some inappropriate comments. We need to consider things like:

  • respect
  • diversity
  • language
  • videos
  • pictures
  • polls
  • the purpose of this blog

Do any of these things need to be defined? How would you define them? Are any of them non-issues? What should the issues be? We'll talk about some of this in class. I'm just looking for your thoughts and ideas about this - I'm not looking for anything formal. Your ideas will be put into a contract that you will sign and return to me so that we all understand what the "rules" are on our blog site.

6th and 7th periods - you'll need to write out your ideas and upload them to your Drop Box on your blog page.

4th period - we shall discuss amongst ourselves.

Thursday, 8/27 :: Great Moments in Communication

Hello 8th graders!

Today I am giving you a questionnaire to fill out about communication and technology. We will discuss some of these questions together as a class and you will be graded today on your participation in this discussion.

You will then need to complete this assignment as homework. You can access these questions by clicking on this link and choosing to download or save this document to your computer:

Communication Questions

You'll need to then open it from your computer to work on it. If you simply open it, any work you do on it cannot be saved and your work will disappear! Make sure that you save or download this link and then open it!

You will need to do this assignment in a word processing program (Word, WordPerfect, etc.) It is due at the beginning of class when we see each other again on Monday, August 31.

DUE: in class, Monday, 8/31. To turn in this assignment:

  • Email it to fwafaTech*@gmail.com
    • replace the * with your class period - example: 6th period, use fwafatech6@gmail.com
  • Bring it on a USB thumb drive or a CD
  • If you cannot turn it in either of the first to methods, please print it out and turn in a hard copy (paper).

We will spend more time next week with the actual process of turning in homework as well as other class procedures.
