TBA for fall 2009
PROM PICTURES ARE READY!
If you do not log off of your computer before you leave, you will receive a detention
Yesterday we added anchor tags and some special tags for aligning text and adding spaces.
Today, we continue working on your pages. This is a link to the final assignment description for your web page project: final_webPage.rtf.
DUE: Tuesday, 5/26 - your final web page
Today I will come around and check the content that you've gathered for your personal web page. I want you to begin building your web page with what you've gathered, using the tags that we've learned so far. And, about those tags...
DUE: tomorrow, Wednesday, 5/20 Go through your html notes and put together one page of the tags that we've learned up to this point. I want you to print this out and put it in your class's IN folder (name, class). This will count as a test score!
We're learning some cool stuff, but there's only so much you can do with a peom about your favorite food. I want to you gather material about a subject that interests you that you can use on your first web page. You may want to use your resume, or use information from a paper you've written, or you may want to talk about your art here at FWAFA. Think about what interests you and write some information about that that you can use on your webpage.
Also begin to create or gather images that you might want to use on your web page. Inside of your html folder, create a new folder named "images" and collect your graphics/images in that folder. Please be aware of copyright issues during this process!
DUE: Tuesday, 5/19 - You'll need to have your information gathered so that you may begin creating your web page. I'll also check your image folder that you created in your html folder. You grade will be based upon how prepared you are to begin coding.
We'll continue to learn some new tags as well. Yesterday we learned about the font tag and its attributes. Today, we'll cover the image tag and its attributes.
I want to encourage you to use those HMTL resource links that you sent me - you need to be able to look things up for yourself when you can't remember the details about a particular tag!
Yesterday, we covered all of the formatting tags:
Today we'll learn to add styles to your text using font tags. Font tags, while very simple, also require detailed syntax in order for them to work. I'll be careful to point that out!
These are just some tips for writing efficient markup:
First, why is my text all blue? It's not supposed to be! Someone tell me please!
Thank you to the super sleuths that identified the missing closing </h4> tag on the date line.
Now, open up your favorite food text file in your basic text editor. You'll need to add the basic HTML structure that we learned about earlier this week. Then, we'll learn some more formatting that will make your poem look like a poem!
ASSIGNMENT: I want you to find at least 2 online resources that you can use as reference for writing HTML. Don't just give me a site that looks good; it needs to be one that you will actually use. Some sites have all the info but the navigation is difficult. Find sites that work for you and give information that you will need to refer to quickly!
DUE: Thursday morning, 5/14 BEFORE class begins! Email your links to your class's email address - fwafatechX@gmail.com. Include your name in the title!
We'll use and see some new tags in action and then practice using them in writing an html document. Be sure to take more notes!
HTML assignment #1 (html file): Will the code in this sample work correctly or not? If not, you'll need to correct the coding and save it as assignment01.html in your maddox\html folder. Be sure to read the content on that assignment page!!!
This is the text file that goes with assignment #1
HTML assignment #2: Write a poem about your favorite food. Turn this poem into an html document that uses the following tags: <h1>, <h3>, <p>, and <br>. Remember that all tags need to be closed, except for the <br> tag.
DUE: Assignment #1 - Wednesday, 5/13 in class
DUE: Assignment #2 - Wednesday 5/13 at the beginning of class. That might mean that you will have homework tonight.
It's time to get on with it! Today we'll lay the groundwork for a basic html document. You'll need to take notes about this information because the terminology will be used as such for the rest of this html unit. Make sure that you understand:
Fontography...... fonts...... typefaces...... serif...... sans-serif...... x-heights...... font families...... monospace..... decorative...... oh my!
Using the information that you discover in the above websites and any other resources that you may find, create a PowerPoint presentation that introduces the wide wide world of fonts and fontography. You'll need to cover:
Remember that the content of this ppt presentation is about type and typography when you are adding styles to your work. Try to use fonts in a creative way using color, font-faces, font-sizes, font-styles to convey your information. Save this file as: fontIntro_name.ppt
DUE: Thursday 5/7 at the end of the period - sophomores, due on Friday 5/8 at the beginning of the period
This will be graded upon:
I hope you followed along in class yesterday. This quiz covers exactly what we covered in class. Since most of your brains are full of TAKS information (and I certainly don't want to interfere with that), you may use your notes. You may not use the internet. I am not looking for long, complex answers; if you paid attention, you'll know how you should answer.
When you are finished, please print this out and put it in the appropriate IN folder. (And since you are in high school, I'll assume you know to put your name and class period on it, too)
DUE: today, by the end of class
I'll go over this worksheet with you and help you make sense of it all.
Some of you (I hope) will be pleased to know that I've extended the due date through today...yeay? If you want to spend some more time with what you've already turned in, I'll just use the one that was submitted last.
Today in class, you need to be doing one of 3 things:
Make sure that your Intro to WWW and HTML assignments are emailed to me by the end of your class periods today! (revised date: Friday, 4/24))
I will grade these based on the answers that you come up with as well as the effort that you put into finding them (I do remember how you've used you class time on this assignment and that will be taken into account). Points will also be deducted for late assignements. IF you were absent when this assignment was given, you have an extra 24 hours - same due times on Friday, 4/24.
You still need to follow the instructions given on 4/22 for naming your assignmnet and turning it in.
Be sure to check this page again tomorrow for Friday's instructions....
Well, I'm glad you asked! (That makes a teacher feel good!) Download this assignment and complete it as best as you can. Some questions we answered yesterday in class and some will need to be looked up. Some questions might seem rather vague, so tell me everything that you think is pertinent about that question. As always, include the url of your answer after your answer!
DUE: Thursday, 4/23 in class
When you are finished, save it as name_introWorksheet.rtf and email it to your class's gmail address:
Who cares? Well, you do, of course! What are the 3 mechanisms that must be in place for the www to work? How does a URL work? What is a URL anyway? Get out your note taking tools and keep up. You never know when you might have to know things like this....
As I'm grading your photo essays, I'm noticing that not everyone has followed all the directions for posting your essay. So, just to be clear:
Have a great 3 day weekend!
I know you all couldn't sleep last night in anticipation of today's announcement of the winners and losers for your class period! Well, wait no more! The final results are posted on the right as "FINAL RESULTS" if you'd like to see the overall stats for all of the teams. Otherwise, ladies and gentlemen, the Biggest Winners and Losers of the 2008-2009 Fantasy Big 12 Basketball Season are as follows:
Congratulations to all the teams who played this season - you are ALL winners!
You'll need to figure up your win/loss record for your away games and report them to me today so that I may prepare a proper announcement of our class's award winners. This process is much easier than figuring your home game win/loss record! To figure your away game statistic:
Then, tomorrow, an appropriate recognition for a variety of awards!
I must say thank you to Erik Danielson for pointing out that originally, we only recorded half of our games.... this old lady's brain just needed some time to absorb that process and then be able to explain it.
The final product is due on Friday, April 3. Please take time and do a good job on this - this counts as a test grade!
We are using an online presentation application called Tabblo. You'll need to create an account for yourself there - please choose a username so that I know it's you! You'll need to check your email then for an email from me with a link to join your class period's group. I have these groups set to private and as invitation only. If you don't get this email, let me know!
Once you're logged in, you'll need to first upload your pictures. Use the "upload" tab and follow the instructions. This will take some time! It would be best if you could upload your pics at home. Once they're uploaded, drag the ones you want to use to the "lightbox" below - you don't have to use everything that you uploaded.
When you've got your pictures in the light box, go to the "create" tab and choose either online or book from the dropdown menu - your assignment should be in one of those formats. You'll then have choices of templates and styles for your photoEssay. You don't have to go with the first thing that you choose - you may end up creating several projects before you get what you want. Just save the one for your assignment and make sure that your "group" can view it.
In addition to uploading your photoEssay, you will also need to look at your classmates' projects and comment on at least 5 of them. These need to be "professional" comments about the content, the photography, the editing or something on the topic of this assignment! If you choose to comment about something that you like, you also need to say why you like it. if you have questions about something, post them. You will need to check your photoEssay's comments and answer any questions that might have been posted.
Please take some time to look at other Tabblo projects! There are some really great, creative ideas there to inspire you!
When you are finished with this whole process, you will need to bring something to class that will keep you busy. You may log on only to look at the other photoEssays and make comments or for working on another assignment - be prepared to show me why you need to be on your computer. When you are finished commenting and with your school work, you will need to log off. This will not be free time for computer games - if you choose to play games, you will also be choosing to serve a detention.
a most excellent resource for everything photography
CTE due on Friday, 3/27 - I WILL NOT ACCEPT THIS ASSIGNMENT LATE.
This is the schedule for completing your Photo Essay assignment:
GIMP is an open source (free) image editing program created by the same people that created Photoshop that we use at FWAFA. There is a plethora great image editors out there to download or to use online. Basic image editing techniques are very similar regardless of which image editing program you are using.
We will learn how to:
Right-click and save the first three photos to your image folder in your account:
Use the rest of the images for practice.
Here are some resources for learning to use GIMP:
If some of you still need some ideas for your photo essay assignment, we'll take one last day to brainstorm ideas. Otherwise, use your class time to finish your proposal and/or work on your CTE that's due Friday!
You will need to write a proposal paper about your plans for your photo essay assignment, similar to how you write one for Mrs. Maddoux about your research paper topic. I would like you to address these questions in your proposal:
DUE: 3/25, Wednesday in class. You will need to print out your Photo Essay Proposal and put it in the IN folder for your class period along with your name and class period.
We'll have a Current Technology Event due on Friday. Be sure to check out the CTE Resources page to remember what I expect in your CTE's as well as some resources for where to find an article.
OK. Now we all know what we're doing with out cameras - right? So, we're going to take some time now to look at good photography. Your assignment is to find 3 or 4 photo essays online that interest you. You'll need to turn in the urls for these photo essays and tell me what about that essay interests you. If you'd like to list more than the 3 or 4, I will consider that as extra credit, but your annotations need to be excellent!
This is an example of what I'm looking for:
http://www.susanmullally.com/photos/wik_photos/index.html
This photo essay was created by Susan Mullally, an art professor at Baylor. Waco has a group called the Church Under the Bridge that is comprised of mostly homeless people. Mullally's curiousity about the homeless culture led her to create this photo essay based on the question, "what do you keep?" The pictures show a range of pride, humility, and sadness as the subjects answer the question and display their cherised treasures. I found it to be extremely profound as I asked myself the same question - what do I keep?
DUE: tomorrow, Friday, 3/13 at the beginning of class. Use zoho to turn in your essay locations and annotations. Title the file: period_name_essay.rtf (3rd_sherill_essay.rtf)
Download the test file and save it to your maddox folder. Pay very careful attention to the instructions on the test. I am looking for details!
When you are finished, send it to sherill.maddox@gmail.com as an email attachment. Please add your name and class period to the subject.
We can review for the test if you want to - it's up to you.
Today I will look at the study guides that you wrote on Friday for your assignment. Your grade on these is based only on whether you did it or not - it is NOT a refelction of the quality of your study guide! That is up to you!
For today, you'll need to fingure your team scores for this final game in conference play - games played on 3/5, 3/6, 3/7 and 3/8. Then, I want you to get with your co-coach and figure up your teams win/loss record by using the scores enterd on the master schedule sheet for your class.
DUE: TODAY - game #9 score, total win/loss record, study guide check.
Remember the test on Wednesday!
Since there is a test on Wednesday, today's assignment is to write a study guide for yourself. Create a list of questions or topics that you think you should study for and then write brief summaries for each one. The plan is that you can just use this guide in preperation for the test on Wednesday.
DUE: Monday, March 9 - study guide notes. You will need to show your study guide to me on Monday morning in class. You will be graded on the throuroughness of your study topics.
What did we talk about yesterday? Do you know it well enough to take a test over it? We'll review so that you will be ready for a test over it. We'll also look more closely at the resource files that I listed in yesterday's assignment. There will be a test based on this information.
Be ready for the test on Wednesday, 3/11.
Some resource files that you'll need to study for the test:
You'll need to have your Intro assignment open while we go over the answers together in class.
SLR? DSLR? Point and shoot? Pixels and megapixels? Resolution? Format? Lots of options out there! What do they mean, what difference do they make and why you should care?
Before the artist can create the art, the artist must have a working knowledge of his tool. We're going to take a look at the answers to those questions today so that you may be able to use your camera to the best of its capabilities.
Assignment: Download and answer these questions. You will need to use search and writing techniques to summarize the findings for your answers.
http://digital-photography-school.com/should-you-buy-a-dslr-or-point-and-shoot-digital-cameraDUE: Monday at the beginning of class
Games played on 2/22, 2/23, 2/24, 2/25.
We'll look at some examples of intentional and unintentional plagiarism/copyright infringement. As we'll discover, the definition of "plagiarism" is subjective to the teacher making the assignment, the school or your institution's discresion. We'll also see that sometimes, ignorance is no excuse! So be informed!
For the first 15 minutes of class, update your team score. Game #5 is for games played on 2/19, 2/20 and 2/21. Games played on 2/22 are for our Game #6, so you can get that started. You'll need verbally tell me your score today.
When that is finished, we'll have a discussion about the definition of "summary" and "paraphrase." You need to turn that writing assignment in at the end of the period today.
Today's game update is for games played on 2/15, 2/16, 2/17 and 2/18. Share your updates on Zoho with me.
When you are finished, I would like you to write 3 paragraphs, one that definines "summary", another that defines "paraphrase" and finally, a comparison and contrast of the two. I would like you to use 3 different sources - you only need to cut and paste the URL, rather than use the MLA format. If you quote from an article or use an image, you do need to cite your source. We will discuss these in class tomorrow. You will need to print this assignment and turn it into your class's IN folder.
DUE: In class tomorrow, Friday 2/20
"Plagiarism" covers a wide area of writing and we need to review what exactly does and what doesn't fall into that category. We will begin by defining the difference between a "summary" and a "paraphrase." Don't automatically assume that you know the differences! Have you ever really looked it up before?
I would like you to do some research on these 2 forms of writing - summary and paraphrase.
Present these results in a creative way that can be used as part of the FWAFA policy on plagiarism.
DUE: Feb 24, Tuesday
Um, yeah. Teams updates - do that. You need to update your spreadsheet record, but when you report your score to me, I want you to use Word and be creative. I will tell you who your opponent was for the 2/11 game so that you may use that information as well. Your team name, game date and final score must be on the report, and you must make this report interesting. Think about how you learn about game scores in the real world - how are scores reported? How can you make your score report exciting, even it you have a loss? How can immediately know that this report is from your team? Can you promote team spirit with this report?
DUE: 2/13, Friday - team score update - place it in the IN folder for your class period.
TOMORROW - CTE DUE
You need to have your judges sheet and if you haven't presented yet, that needs to be ready to go at the beginning of class! We are going to get this done!
Game schedules will be posted and the team scoring process will be posted here on the website. Thursday morning we will take a little time to update your team scores. Then on to bigger and better things (and more interesting? maybe yes, maybe no).
You need to get your team score for your first game. To do this, you need to find the total points scored by each of your players in the last game that they played, then total those points for your team score. The schedule will be posted loud and proud on Monday morning!
Spend some time on your account at CBSSports.com discovering how the site works and how to find the information that you'll need for your players.
DUE: Sunday, midnight on Zoho - Your player roster with each player's total points scored during his last game and the total of those points. Use a spread sheet and a formula to total the team score as each player's total is added..... If you don't remember how to do this, talk amongst yourselves. This is not the same as doing a simple sum once everything is entered! I will check for your formula when I grade your team score post.
| Player #1 | 16 (points score in his last game) |
| Player #2 | 8 |
| Player #3 | 3 |
| Player #4 | 11 |
| Player #5 | 3 |
| Player #6 | 9 |
| etc. | etc. |
| team total | 50 |
Use this link to fantasyTeam_list.xls to set up your team roster.
Go to CBSsports.com and set up an account there where you can follow your own team. We will go over this in class and I will post a tutorial for registering and setting up your teams on CBSsports.com.
Thank you Parker for finding this website that will keep track of your players for you so that you don't have to look up each one individually to find your team score!
If you come up with other questions, I'll post them here so everyone is on the same page.
The draft will happen today whether everyone is ready or not. If you aren't ready, you will choose your team from the players not chosen in the draft.
DUE: Tuesday, 04feb. You'll need to turn in your original list of your 16 draft choices into the IN folder for your period. I'll accept this on Wednesday as well. After that, it's counted less 10%.
Today, we draft! You'll need to turn in your original list of your 16 draft choices into the IN folder for your period.
note - we had no network access so several coaches couldn't get their draft lists.... tomorrow is another day
We'll continue what we've started and/or start the Team Introductions. You'll need your judges sheet!
Please tell Mr. Adams about the whole basketball project - how it works, what we've done, what we're going to do, why your team is going to clean up, etc.
Today I'm handing out the hard copy of the cummulative Big12 stats from which you will choose your DreamTeam. Spend your time in class today coming up with a list of at least 16 players for your team. I will ask you to turn in your pre-draft list along with any notes that you've made on Monday, 2/2. These are the prep-guidelines for our draft:
The Actual Draft
DUE: Monday, 2/2 - a copy of your 16 draft choices with notes
Today, we PRESENT!
Judge's sheets will be handed out and you will need to score each categorie appropriately and anonymously. Your final grade, which will count as a test score, will be determined by your peer's scores and my own observations. I'm looking forward to some awesome work!
Those that don't present today will do so then next Monday.
I apologize for any confusions or inconviences in regards to your 1st 3 weeks grades. I do hope we got it all worked out.
The schedule for this week is this:
As always, what is posted here on the website always trumps whatever anyone tells you, even myself! I will be gone on Friday and you will need to follow those set up instructions very carefully as Detail is King!
Big 12 Teams Stats - Pre-Conference play (zip file)
This is a compilation of your stats projects, organized by each statistic, showing each teams top 8 players. This is what you'll use when you make your Dream Team selections. I will also hand you a hard copy of these files, but they are also here for reference. These stats are based on 12-15 games played.
ESPN Big 12 Team Stats
These are the current stats, based on 18 games. Use this only to check how a player's individual stat lines up with his other stats. For example, Favaro, who plays for Colorado, has a 1.000 free throw average. This should raise some questions about the rest of his game, so use this link to check him out.
Today in class, we'll look at these and talk about them in class. Use the rest of your time to work on your team introduction.
We really are going to finish this Dream Team project!
Today, you'll organize yourselves in to Coaching Staffs of 2. Each staff needs to finish these tasks:
It should go without saying that creativity is key here! Your grade will be made up of your peers' scores as well as my own score. You've seen some presentations in your class before - you know what the competition will be, so be prepared!
DUE: Tuesday, in class. You will introduce your Dream Team to the competition!
What are they? Who really cares anyway? Or should I care? What do statistics have to do with me? More than you know, which you will discover today in class. Here are a couple of websites that answer some of these questions:
We will discuss texting technology in class today. I will be grading you on your participation in this discussion.
Well all do it. We all enjoy it (mostly). We all are practically addicted to it. What? Texting technology! Read this article about Texting and Instant Messaging and then answer these questions about what you read:
Questions about Texting and Instant Messaging.
You'll need to right click and save these questions to your hard drive and then open them to complete them. If you need to work on them at home, be sure to upload them to your Zoho account before you leave class today.
DUE: Tuesday, 13jan, at the beginning of class. Be ready to discuss your answers.
OK. Well, "messing" might not be the right word, but we are going to do something with them now that we have them. Yipee, right?
Using the statistics that you've kept for your individual players, create a report for your team showing these statistics. Use the skills that you learned in Excel for figuring averages and totals as well as basic math skills to get these lists.
The assignment details are at this link. We'll go over them together in class so that you know exactly what is expected.
DUE: Friday, 1/9 at the end of class
